La Ronge Atom Green Ice Wolves Host Tournament

2012-03-10

Friday, March 9th was a first for La Ronge Minor Hockey in quite a few years.

Friday, March 9th was a first for La Ronge Minor Hockey in quite a few years. The Atom Green Ice Wolves started their own tournament hitting the ice against their cross town rivals, JRMCC Braves. The Ice Wolves were full of energy as they geared up for a fun weekend of hockey. They scored four times in the first taking a 4-1 lead into the second period. JRMCC had quite a few chances but were not able to beat the Ice Wolves goaltender. The Ice Wolves recorded the first win of the tournament with a 7-1 victory.

The Green Ice Wolves and their families arrived at the rink bright and early to prepare the rink for their out of town guests. The dressing rooms were transformed into personalized, professional looking dressing rooms. The many prizes donated from the community and local businesses were displayed, and the kids were ready to play. Game two found the host Ice Wolves up against the Grey Stars from Prince Albert. This was an action packed game as both teams left all they had on the ice. Outstanding goaltending at both ends of the ice kept the game within reach for either team until the dying seconds of the third period when a scramble in front of the Stars’ net gave La Ronge their second win of the tournament with a 3-2 victory.

The second game of the day saw the JRMCC Braves take on the Prince Albert Sharks. This too, was another fast paced game, the lead changing hands several times and ending as a four all tie. The third game Saturday had the Prince Albert Sharks return to the ice after a short break to face the host La Ronge Green Ice Wolves. The hard earned tie in the previous game left the Sharks tired, but they battled hard. La Ronge took advantage of the back to back games moving the puck quickly, skating to a 13-4 win. In the fourth game of the day JRMCC Braves met the Prince Albert Grey Stars. The two evenly matched teams traded goals until half way through the game when the Stars pulled ahead and finished with an 8-5 win. The final game of the tournament had the two teams from Prince Albert face off against each other. The Sharks took advantage of the Stars early, as the Stars entered the second half of their double header of the tourney. The game was full of excitement for both teams as they traded goals and finished with a three all tie.

At the end of each game, teams competed in a timed shootout. Players from each team faced their opponents’ goaltenders simultaneously, racing back to the center line so their teammate could go. For each goal scored ten seconds was subtracted from the teams’ time. Times from all three shootouts were tallied for very close race to first place. The La Ronge Green Ice Wolves finished nine seconds faster than the Prince Albert Grey Stars earning their team a Kentucky Fried Chicken party.

The La Ronge Green Ice Wolves and their families would like to thank the Prince Albert Grey Stars, Prince Albert Sharks and JRMCC Braves for attending their tournament. Hopefully this will be the first of many. The community and local businesses were instrumental in the success of this terrific day of hockey. Thank you to all who contributed and helped out.

This concludes a great season of hockey for the La Ronge Green Ice Wolves. We would like to thank The Northerner for keeping the community informed of all the happening throughout our season.
